Agriculture's role in the climate conversation

Policy discussions at the state and national level are increasingly focused on climate change, in addition to the number of programs available in the private sector. The concept of carbon sequestration or recapturing carbon in the soil via photosynthesis from growing crops has been a common theme in these conversations.

The agriculture sector remains a relatively small net emitter of greenhouse gases, typically only about 10% of US emissions. In addition, scientific understanding of greenhouse gas emissions or long-term sequestration in diverse farming systems is not well understood and continues to be studied.

Michigan Farm Bureau policy supports voluntary, incentive-based programs and markets that work for all of agriculture. This includes private sector ecosystem services markets, incentives for climate-smart practices, incentives for energy savings and on-farm energy production, and other voluntary opportunities for members that help with conservation practice adoption while ensuring economic viability.
