Policy Development

Member-Driven Policy

Farm Bureau policy is a true grassroots process. The positions Farm Bureau staff works to protect and enhance are not set by the staff itself but by the Farm Bureau membership. Each action is based on member-focused, member-adopted resolutions at the local level through County Farm Bureau work, at the state level during the Michigan Farm Bureau Annual Convention and at the national level through an affiliation with the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Farm Bureau Policy

Farm Bureau members have the opportunity to not only participate in the adoption of the policies that guide Michigan Farm Bureau’s position but its members that draft those policies for consideration. Policies are submitted through County Farm Bureaus and, if approved, move onto the Annual Meeting for debate and potential adoption by voting delegate members.

American Farm Bureau Policy

Michigan Farm Bureau actively participates in policy-setting on a national level through its relationship with American Farm Bureau Federation. Just as Michigan Farm Bureau policy is set by its members through a robust process, AFBF policy is established in much the same manner capped off by delegate voting at the AFBF Annual Convention.

State Policy Development Committee

Policy resolutions come from the 65 County Farm Bureaus and it’s the task of the State Policy Development Committee to vet those member-drafted policies and ultimately move forward those that will be voted on at the Annual Meeting. The committee is appointed by the Board of Directors with representatives from all 12 MFB districts.
