Oceana Co. Young Farmers host skeet shoot

Even in the midst of fruit harvest, Oceana County Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer skeet shoot drew a respectable turnout of 15 participants.

Each year District 7’s county Farm Bureaus — Mecosta, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana and Osceola — set goals for themselves, documenting what they plan to accomplish throughout the coming year. Both Oceana and Newaygo this year aimed to coordinate with a neighboring county on joint Young Farmer events.

Oceana hosted its first skeet shoot July 15 at Pine Ridge Sporting Clays in Shelby.

“It was an easy event to plan and a fun day out,” said Megan Herrygers, the county’s Young Farmer chair.

With cherries in season and audits underway in Newaygo, Oceana and Mason counties, the turnout wasn’t quite what Herrygers hoped for. Even so 15 members turned out for the day, each leaving with a smile on their face and some memorable fun under their belts.

Oceana President Rob Rudat even signed three new associate members for the event, and took advantage of the opportunity to talk agriculture with them in between blasting away at clay pigeons.

The facility is truly one of the best in the state and a great way to enjoy the outdoors.
