Oceana cards a big win with tire recycling event

It can be a real pain to get rid of old tires, and as all farmers know, old tractor tires are even harder.

Oceana County Farm Bureau saw the need among its membership to provide a means for making their stockpiled scrap rubber go away — responsibly.

So after six-plus months of planning, Oceana’s first ag tire-disposal event finally happened Oct. 21.

More than 34 members took advantage of the discounted rate, filling two semi-trailers on the county Farm Bureau’s dime. At the end of the day they’d collected a total of 76 tractor tires, 76 semi tires, 31 implement tires and 558 passenger tires.

Wilbur-Ellis of Hart helped make it possible by offering their facility as the pick-up site — a convenient, central location for hosting the tire trailers as members brought their scrap tires in throughout the day.

County President Rob Rudat and employees from Country Dairy in New Era were on hand to help with loading, as were a trio of Montague FFA members on loan for the day.

Lynda Herremans from the Oceana County Conservation District helped plan the event — but wasn’t responsible for the lousy weather!

Altogether it was such a huge success that Oceana County Farm Bureau’s board has already applied for a grant to help make a follow-up tire recycling event happen again next year.
