Gladwin County Farm Bureau held its inaugural Feed-A-Farmer event June 23, putting an early-summer, member-appreciation spin on what’s normally scheduled for the autumn harvest.

Organized by Membership Captain Gabby Tester, the event represented an impressive undertaking for a county Farm Bureau that’s been trying new things during an ongoing rebuilding phase.

“We decided to do it during hay season, but didn’t really know what to expect,” said Vicki Donovan, Gladwin’s administrative manager. “We hoped to get at least 10 people signed up, but our e-mail in May didn’t see much of a response.

“I updated my list and sent out a second message the first week of June and the response was a bit better. Then the second week of June we used the ringless voicemail offered through Michigan Farm Bureau and the response was amazing!”

When delivery day came, organizers delivered 76 meals to 25 farm families across Gladwin County.

“All but one of them were new to Farm Bureau involvement — and we surpassed our goal for the membership campaign!” Donovan said.

Everyone who R.S.V.P.’d was on the receiving end of a pulled pork dinner and an MFB-branded five-gallon bucket containing a big bag of chips, jug of lemonade, a county Farm Bureau brochure, member savings guide and various other swag items. Everyone was thanked for participating and their follow-up feedback gathered afterwards.
