Michigan Farm Bureau’s AgriPac is endorsing Dr. Travis Menge and Mike Balow in their Nov. 8 general election race to join the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.

Dr. Travis Menge

Growing up on a ranch in Colorado and traveling cross country during his medical training, Dr. Travis Menge understands rural communities and the importance of the farm economy.

“With an agricultural background, I am confident in my ability to lead MSU – our nation’s first land grant institution,” Menge said. “My priorities for Michigan State will ensure its spot at the forefront of agriculture and help promote it as a global leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).”

His campaign website elaborates as he outlines, “Menge’s Prescription for MSU.” Among the doctor’s priorities:

  • Bring common sense healthcare leadership
  • Reduce tuition costs and improve educational value
  • Make high quality education accessible for all Michigan students
  • Improve transparency and accountability
  • Continue to grow MSU’s presence as a global leader in education, science, research, and technology
  • Ensure opportunities are available for Michigan students from every background to earn both merit-based and needs-based scholarships

Mike Balow

Candidate Mike Balow would also bring a wealth of experience to the trustees’ table. Following seven years of service in the U.S. Navy, he’s spent more than 20 years as a community leader and businessman in the real estate industry.

According to Balow’s campaign website he wants to “help be a voice of reason and change to what he found to be an incredibly dysfunctional environment at the MSU Leadership level…”

Other priorities for Balow include:

  • Fighting mandatory remote learning
  • Bringing common sense financial oversight to excessive and political university spending
  • Ensuring transparency and fairness in decision making
  • Holding leadership and faculty accountable
