“By signing our petition, you will help communicate to legislators and decision-makers that MAEAP should continue helping farms voluntarily reduce agricultural pollution risks through education and on-farm assistance,” said MFB Legislative Counsel Rebecca Park. “Our county Farm Bureau members, alongside a community of our agricultural and conservation partners are supporting Senate Bill 494 sponsored by Kevin Daley to renew the fees paid by farmers and agribusinesses to support the program.”

Park explained the legislation also amends current law to create more opportunities to help farms protect water quality and soil health.

“Protect is a crucial word to focus on when we’re discussing MAEAP,” she added. “For more than 20 years this program has — and hopefully will continue to — protect farmers’ ability to do what they do best: producing food for our state, nation and abroad.

“Further, it helps protect, renew and sustain our state’s priceless natural resources, which includes the soil and water we rely on for food production.”

For more than two decades, MAEAP has fostered strong partnerships between the state’s farm and agribusiness organizations, conservation and environmental groups, regulators and more.

Approximately 3,500 Michigan farms have completed nearly 6,000 on-farm verifications through MAEAP. And within the last three years alone, more than 12,000 farms have started the process of working through the program.
