Charity softball tourney fights Osceola Co. hunger

Softballers known simply as Revolution came out on top of Osceola’s inaugural Angels in the Outfield tournament last summer.

Batter up! The second annual Angels in the Outfield charity softball tournament comes up to the plate at 8 a.m. July 23 at the Leroy Ball Fields.

Sponsored by Osceola County Farm Bureau, the event benefits Angels of Action, a Big Rapids-based charity fighting hunger throughout Osceola County. Last year’s inaugural tournament raised $3,600 for the organization, whose Backpack Blessings program delivers hundreds of essential-filled packs to local K-12 students every school year.

“We’ve secured a grant that’ll match whatever we raise up to $2,500,” said Sandy Keller, president of the county Farm Bureau. “We’d love to give that full $5,000 to this very worthy and vital charity that does such good work for families all over Osceola County.”

Shirts and concessions will be available on-site. New this year, organizers welcome area crafters to market their wares all day for a nominal $25 booth fee.

Both men’s and co-ed brackets are available. Player fees are $100 per team or $10 per individual; Farm Bureau members play for free.

Those interested in participating or donating are encouraged to contact Taylor Martin (810-358-5447; [email protected] ) or Jennifer Marfio (231-796-1119; [email protected]) for more information.
